Australia Day… What can I eat without un-doing my hard work this New Year?
Australia Day presents an awesome opportunity to hang out with family and friends while appreciating this beautiful country in which we live.
Social occasions always present challenges for people on their weight loss or fitness journeys – the temptation is real as hosts lay out freshly baked French rolls, mouth-watering pavlovas and of course, the cold frothy beer.
So if you’ve started the new year off well – don’t undo your hard work this Australia Day weekend. Here’s Tony’s tips to navigating the party platters this weekend.
1. Drinks: pack your esky with soda water and slices of lemon, lime or even berries. There’s a few great no or low carb kombuchas on the market now (try Bucci or Amplify). If you MUST drink alcohol, choose gin or vodka, where the process of fermentation is less… processed. But, remember if you drink booze, you’ll throw yourself out of ketosis and it will be up to 48 hours before you’re back in, and burning fat.
2. Cheese, glorious cheese: no doubt you’ll be presented with a glorious array of cheese platters over the weekend. Be selective about what pick off the platter – choose the cheese, nuts, meats and go easy on the berries and crackers.
3. Meat: eat as much as you like! Be wary of the marinades, rissoles and the sausages, they can be full of additives, preservatives and non-food products.
4. The sweets: generally a weak spot for most… choose dark chocolate, berries and cream, or nuts. Step away from the glorious pavlova.
Remember: You are not alone in your journey. There are people at backyard barbecues all over the country internally wrestling with the choice of carbs and sugars versus weight loss and health. You’ve got this, and what’s more Australian than making a unique choice, just for you!
